Salvation Army History and Theology

I’m attempting to build a list of online resources relevant to the history and theology of The Salvation Army.   Please let me know if you have suggestions.

My Posts about The Salvation Army

Salvation Army History Websites and Academic Resources

The SA Historical and Philatetic Association has an interesting website, which includes Kindle books and other resources.  If you are interested in SA history you should also consider joining the facebook group.

Salvationist.ca has a good list of SA History websites, including the Army’s International Heritage Centre and other Territorial Heritage Centres, museums, and archives.

Although the Rubicon is no longer an active website, the archives are still up, and under the “education” category are several academic papers and theses available for download.

Word and Deed: A Journal of Salvation Army Theology and Ministry is an academic journal which has been published since 1998.   You can get back issues here.

Though it is just getting off the ground, Booth University College in Winnipeg has established a Centre for Salvation Army Studies.  They have started a lecture series, and have published their first book – Boundless Salvation: The Shorter Writings of William Booth, with Peter Lang (see my review here).

Early Salvationist Books available on Internet Archive

[ordered chronologically]:

Note: I have included books mostly from Internet Archive, because this site provides scanned-image books, which are ideal for research, since they are images of the hard-copies, and therefore include the original page numbers.  You can also access some of them through Princeton Theological Seminary’s Theological Commons, which has a nicer search interface.  There other sites, like Project Gutenberg and the Wesley Center Online, that have Salvationist books available in a typed-out formats.  Sometimes these files include original pagination, and sometimes they do not.  Internet Archive also provides options for downloading files in several formats, including plain text, epub, and Kindle.  See also Jon’s comment below about a site where you can get some of these for Kindle for a low price.

  1. I discovered your blog “by chance” and have a question: we are very much interested in the books on S.A. History and Theology that you put online and would like to ask if we could use this material in the online library we are setting up in connection with our summer school for employees, salvationists in leadership position and cadets, called Catherine Programme. Is it possible to have a direct contact with you about it? I would appreciate that – having not found your email address somewhere. Thank you, and congratulations for the intesesting blog!

  2. James, just a note that
Booth-Tucker, Frederick St. George de Latour. Muktifauj, Or Forty Years with The Salvation Army in India and Ceylon. London, Marshall Brothers, n.d. [1900?]
was published in 1923 (See Gordon Moyles’s bibliography, and also 40 years meant since 1883 when the Army invaded India.)
    Regards
    Harold

  3. Hi Adam, thanks for the link. I noticed that the Theological Commons texts are all on Internet Archive – actually the links on their page just take you to Internet Archive where the files are housed. But their search interface is a bit nicer, and you get more info than is sometimes available on archive.org. I’ve added a note above about this, and also some other links.

  4. Hi James, the Salvation Army Historical Association have recently put some 50 high quality books on Kindle as well as working to promote our heritage in other ways such as publishing books, holding Conventions, publishing newsletters etc. We would be happy to help you in any way – you have some excellent material here, thank you.

  5. Thank you Glenn – glad to connect with you online. I am making use of your book in my dissertation.

I will add a link to your website above in the next couple days – I have heard of the Association here and there but I don’t think I’d ever stumbled onto the website before. Lots of great resources. Thanks for the work you are doing.

    Blessings,

    James

  6. Thank you for your kind words James. We also have a very active facebook group which is great for questions people have – you are welcome to join us. There are about 350 facebook SAHPA members around the world. There is also a specialist facebook site on old SA buildings. God Bless, Glenn.
